linuxmuster.net is a comprehensive complete solution for the operation of school IT infrastructure.
The non-profit association linuxmuster.net is responsible for the further development of the school server solution. In coordination with the developers from the community and IT companies and the organised members of the association, the cornerstones of this further development.
When developing our solution, we try to keep some basic ideas in mind.
linuxmuster.net is a further development of the free school server solution openML and thus the direct technical successor of PaedML-Linux 5.
All knowledge acquired by a network administrator or an institution with regard to openML/paedML 5 remains usable and will be further developed on the basis of existing knowledge.
linuxmuster.net is freely available (Open Source) and can be used without licensing or activation.
The web-based graphical user interface (WebUI), educational features, intelligent school-specific user management, fully integration of Linux workstations and other features make teaching with linuxmuster.net easier - and help administrate and maintain the network.
With LINBO self-healing workstations are realized - the installations on the workstations can be easily reset to a standard state by each user in a few minutes
.This allows users to have more freedom of use and unrestricted working. Technical possibilities are not restricted.
Subsequent users can still access an error-free system. Unusable computers caused by faulty installations are a thing of the past.
In addition, the danger of malware (viruses, worms, Trojans) is largely eliminated.
In addition to an easy-to-install and configurable server, linuxmuster.net offers a fully integrated Linux workstation installation (Ubuntu LTS), which can be installed on the workstations in no time. This makes it possible to roll out a complete training environment with all the software required for school operations within a few hours.
Each school has its own individual IT needs, which should be addressed by the network solution used.
Workstations in linuxmuster.net can be operated with Windows (10 and 11) and Linux. Switching between different operating systems at computer startup is possible without waiting times, virtualized operating systems can be managed efficiently.
The installations on the workstations (e.g. on tablets with x86 hardware) can be adapted to the needs of the school with the desired software packages and distributed within a few minutes via the LINBO imaging system. There are no complicated mechanisms in the way, but everyday actions determine the process.
With the OPSI extension, individual Windows installations can be created, provided that corresponding OPSI packages are available for the desired software. OPSI also includes detailed hardware inventory.
Mobile devices (BYOD) can be connected to the network via WLAN, the coovachilli extension of linuxmuster.net enables different scenarios to be implemented that meet the most diverse requirements. For example, WLAN hotspots in the auditorium can only be made available on the Internet (filtered or unfiltered) and wireless access to the intranet in the classroom or teacher's room.
If a monitor monitoring/control of the student screens in the computer room is required, italc can be integrated on the workstations. This allows the teacher to start computers, view all student screens in the computer room at the same time, lock, remotely control or transmit certain screen contents to all of them. In addition to other options, the student computers can also be switched off.
Cloud services can be made available, for example, by connecting an ownCloud system (alternatively Nextcloud), It is possible to connect an external moodle learning platform or an instance directly on the school server.
In addition, there is a room reservation system, an instance for the school portfolio (OSP), a print quota arrangement for limiting printouts, and much more.
Large environments, such as vocational schools, will appreciate the VLAN capability of linuxmuster.net or the ability to expand with a teacher network.
A true unique selling point of linuxmuster.net is the active user community. The network consultants and users of the system help each other via various platforms.
